Party

Published on
So, despite having been at my place now for nearly a year and a half, I never had the opportunity to have a bunch of people over for a party. Last night seemed like as good a time as any, so I invited a small group of people over for some beer, wine and of course, nachos. It was alot of fun, so thanks to everyone who came and helped drink. I’m still sort of amazed that there were more beer bottles here than there were boxes to put them in, which means some of you hardcores brought beer in a bag or something crazy like that. Me telling some weird joke that apparently involves my hand Some of ...

Sad Story

Published on
I read this a few minutes ago. I can only imagine the courage a father must have to sit in a car for nine days with his family, and then venture out alone in the cold snowy wilderness to find help. He made it eight miles on his own, even though search guys could hardly cover any ground themselves in those conditions. “It seems superhuman to me that he was able to cover that amount of distance given what he had and also that he had nine days in the car” before setting out, Josephine County Undersheriff Brian Anderson said. “I’m amazed,” searcher Robert Graham told reporters. “We spent ...

Solar Flare

There was a X9 solar flare of the sun this morning coming from sunspot 929, which is rather large. If it happens again in the next few days, there’s a good chance we’ll be able to see the Aurora this far south. Source: SpaceWeather.com ...

Trans Fat Banned

Published on
I read about this when I woke up: Trans Fat Banned in NYC. I think that’s pretty interesting actually. It opens up a lot of research opportunities since as far as I know it’s the only place that’s banned trans fat to such a large degree. I’m not sure I entirely agree with it though. I think most people know trans fat is bad, so I think putting it on the menu is good enough. Trans fat basically came about because the FDA thought it was super healthy years ago, and made everyone switch from animal/vegetable fats to trans fats. So, everyone, including my family, went out and switched from ...

24, Season Five

Published on
So, on Tuesday, December 5th, 24 Season Five comes out on DVD. I lost a few weeks to my life to the first four seasons, and plan to lose another week to this new season the moment it comes out. I’m pretty excited about it since it’s supposed to be a pretty wicked season. Hopefully they still have a few copies left at Future Shop when I get off of work on Tuesday. ...

Christmas

Published on
I’m such a big fan of Christmas. I don’t know why, since most people tend to get a little grumpier, the malls are way busier, traffic is far more hectic — yet somehow I always tend to get a little happier when my lights are up, or when I see presents under the tree. Lights up at my place The last couple Christmas’s have all sort of slipped past me without me really noticing. I guess I was just really busy, but I always found myself in Chilliwack a day or two before Christmas, wondering where in the world December went, and how was it that I didn’t remember it. So, today I went out and ...

Superman II – The Richard Donner Cut

Published on
For those of you who read my blog from time to time, you might remember my write up when I saw Superman Returns in the summer. It was actually not that bad of a movie (my second viewing I didn’t think it was as good), and when I got home that weekend, I decided to watch Superman I and II again just to remember what they were like. And I have to say, I really enjoyed them (even though Chris says that makes me gay). I was surfing the internet about a year ago, and read about the Richard Donner cut of Superman II. Apparently the original director of Superman I and II was a guy named Richard Donner. ...

Friday night

Went out for a few beers last night after work with some friends. We started at Malones on Seymour and Pender, and eventually ended up down at the Atlantic Trap and Gill for a few more. Even Hesty showed up from Singapore or wherever he was. Beer Drinking Snowman at the Trap I had a good time last night, and got to know Kasia and Rob and bit better down at the Trap and Gill. Rob and Kasia I think I’m heading out to Chilliwack this afternoon to do some shopping, visit some family, and maybe watch a movie or two. Nobody out there has seen me since all my stitches have come out, so I think I’ll ...

Doritos Galore

Published on
I just read that bags of Doritos suddenly started washing up on the shores of North Carolina today. I can’t imagine anything better in this world than having nachos literally wash up beside you at the beach. If only a container carrying salsa would have been beached as well. You can read about it here. ...

Christmas Movies

Published on
So tonight Jeff stopped by for some nachos and to watch a Christmas movie. Well, its not exactly your typical Christmas Movie, but I like to watch Die Hard at least once a season, since it technically has some Christmas music in it. I wish they made movies like that nowadays. The last good action movie with the same spirit was probably True Lies, but everything else just takes itself a little too seriously. On another note, I have an appointment tomorrow morning to get the stitches on my face out. I’ve had these steri-strips across my cheek since the operation, and last night I decided to take ...

Stitch Free – again

Published on
Well, I got the steri-strips off and the stitches out just a while ago. It actually looks pretty good. There’s a small line of dried blood that should come off in the next week or so, but once that’s gone I don’t think there’s gonna to be too much of a scar at all. Here’s a picture taken just a few minutes ago (for those of you interested). Sorry for the stupid angle, and the stupid pose, but it’s hard taking self pics. Me on the couch tonight after cleaning my face a bit So, as Hesty would put it, my head is nearly unfucked now. Everything is looking pretty good. My vision is nearly ...

Does Money Buy Happiness?

Published on
Here’s a good link, thanks to Chris. The connection is complex, he says. But in fact, very rich people rate substantially higher in satisfaction with life than very poor people do, even within wealthy nations, he says. “There is overwhelming evidence that money buys happiness,” said economist Andrew Oswald of the University of Warwick in England. The main debate, he said, is how strong the effect is. ...

Best Sitting Position

Published on
Everyone always bugs me at work for sitting in a sort of “lying down” position. However, recent research seems to back me up. The “slouch” position revealed a reduction in spinal disk height, signifying a high rate of wear and tear on the lowest two spinal levels. Across all measurements, the researchers concluded that the 135-degree position fared the best. As a result, Dr. Bashir and colleagues advise patients to stave off future back problems by correcting their sitting posture and finding a chair that allows them to sit in an optimal position of 135 degrees. “This may be all that ...

Moral Support

I stuck close to home this weekend, only venturing out briefly to restock my movie pile and grab some food. Friday night, Chris and Cisco popped by to see how I was doing. Later, Tiffany, Katherine and Jenn also came by, and we all just listened to music and hung out. Cisco showing off on the guitar It’s pretty cool that it’s snowing outside. I can’t remember the last time it snowed in Vancouver in November. I really love winter. There’s something about the peace and quiet that goes along with the early nights, the crisp cool air, and of course, the falling of snow. Seeing it snow motivated ...

Snow, Sand, and Sky

Published on
Clay posted an article today talking about the snow, and how his camera tended to make everything look dark. What he didn’t realize is that his camera was actually doing what it was probably supposed to do. And here’s why. Almost all cameras have light meters that are set up to try and make every scene around 18% grey. Some guy a long time ago looked around and realized that almost every real-world scene is made up of midtones, and these midtones are usually in the ballpark of 18%. So, whenever a camera looks at a scene, it tries to figure out the amount of exposure needed to make the subject ...

The Hidden Rift has a new home

I finally got tired of leaving my computer on 24-7 for this web site, so I set up a hosting account through godaddy. Surprisingly, it wasn’t that hard to transfer everything over from my machine. The funny thing is that I probably am going to save more money on power by having it off than it costs me to host it. I’m sure there will be a few things here and there that don’t work, but I’ll fix them as I hit them. So, as of now, the computer in my room is completely off, and hopefully I can finally have a good night’s sleep. ...

Surgery

Published on
Well, yesterday was an interesting day. I guess I should really start with that night, since I did whatever I could to keep myself busy, knowing that I was going in for surgery early in the morning. Obviously, I didn’t really have that good a sleep, since I had a lot on my mind. 7am came pretty quicky, and I made my way down to the hospital for my 8am time. Despite them sending me multiple emails and leaving a few voice messages that I should be there at 8am, apparently at 7:45am, I was “late”, and people seemed to be in a huff about that.. Not sure what that was about. So, first thing they ...
