Wow, big weekend for photography. I decided that this is “night shot” month, so most of my shots will be low light ones for a while.

And a HDR of Yaletown tonight, right before I went to bed.

A new study says people who have full-fat milk gain *less* weight over time. I hate to say I told you so, but I’m not a big believer in the whole “fat makes you fat” belief. I agree saturated fat isn’t very good for you, but the other types of fat are. As long as you don’t eat the grissle in a steak, over 2/3 of the fat in it is good fat, which is better than most other things. Which gives me an idea for another blog entry later tonight.
Read about it here. ...
Funny. I was organizing some old photos tonight and came across some videos from the last year. They’re all dated now, but I’ll put some of them up anyways.
I have to say that youtube completely bastardizes the video quality when you give it to them, but oh well.
So, I also seem to be slowly regaining a bit of sensation in my face. The entire left side of my cheek (including the lip, nose and gums on the left side of my face) has basically been numb since my surgery back in November. I think it’s slowly coming back. What’s weird that is that it’s a bit wonky — if I trace my finger ...
I went out tonight and shot a few photos around town. I wanted to try my hand at making a HDR image. Here’s one of the better ones off the Burrard Street Bridge.
Here’s one more in roughly the same location.

All my troubles seemed so far away… (kidding)
So had an interesting day yesterday. Got lots of stuff done at work, which was good. I love being on a “coding roll” where everything makes sense and falls into place.. Having those hard problems to solve is nice as well, but sometimes it’s nice to fall into “brick-laying-mode” where you can just crank out code and feel good about it.
At the end of the day I had my six week follow up with the plastic surgeon who did my surgery. When I saw him after week two, I was a bit concerned because it still didn’t look right. He suggested we give ...
Well, on New Year’s eve, my Samsung A920 stopped working. Right around the stroke of midnight. Should I be worried?
Here’s the deal though. This is the *second* A920 I have owned in about 6 months. Granted, the first one breaking was completely my fault, but I’m pretty bummed that it’s dead now. I’ve had cell phones die before, and no matter the circumstances of how they die, the repair guys always come back and say “water damage — not fixing.” And here’s my take on it. We practically live in a rain forest in BC. Inside these phones is a little paper dot that changes colour when ...
I spent last night hanging out at Bob and Candice’s house. It was a good party, and I had a lot of fun ringing in the New Year. Normally I call a pile of people at midnight and wish them happy New Years, but for some reason my cell phone stopped working last night.

It’s back to work tomorrow 🙁 ...
Well, the relaxing period is nearly over. In just a few days, 2006 will be over, and 2007 will ring in with the first work day in over a week for me. I’ve spent the last few days taking it relatively easy.
On Thursday night I went out with Hesty and Neil down to some places in Yaletown. We hit Elixir, and then made a brief stop at Bar None for a few drinks. I’m definitely getting too old for that place.
Hesty, struggling to contain his enthusiasm
Last night, I went down to Harv’s house for a house party. I was expecting only a few people to be there, but I think there was close to 25 or ...
Clay tagged me the other day, which means I need to state five things about me that nobody really knows. So here goes.
I had a job at K-Mart when I was 17. I’m not sure if my manager didn’t like me, or if some cosmic power was punishing me, but I spent most of my shifts in ladies-wear folding all the panties in the bulk bins. And it’s not like they were some hot thongs or brazillian panties — these were those eggshell-white granny panties. I still wake up screaming in the night thinking of those shifts.
I was a bit pudgy in Ottawa years ago. And by pudgy, I mean sort of chunky. After ...
Well, it’s nearly that time again — in less than 24 hours, 2006 will dissolve forever, and 2007 will be before us. It’s been a strange and challenging year for most people I know, myself included. I started the year with this incredible desire to travel, and ended the year feeling the need to hover closer to home. I saw quite a bit more of the world this year, and managed to visit San Francisco, San Jose, the Monterey Coast, Tokyo, Boston, New York City, Toronto, Calgary, the Rocky Mountains, and nearly made it to Huatulco, Mexico. That’s not bad for a guy who really hates to step onto ...
I went out today and picked up a little Christmas present for myself – the Canon 430EX Speedlight. I’ve never really had a chance to get into flash photography, so I’m looking forward to messing around with it. The nice thing is that the internal flash on my 20D really sucks. For some reason they never included a focus assist lamp for low light conditions. Canon’s way around this was the fire the internal flash several times in a row to try and do a focus in low light. However, this usually scares whoever you’re trying to take a photo of, and causes all the epileptics in the room to ...
Hey everyone,
I just wanted to wish you all a very Merry Christmas! I’m in Chilliwack for a few days enjoying some R & R with my family. I got about twelve hours of sleep last night, plus around 3 or 4 during the day on my dad’s couch this afternoon in front of his new 46″ 1080p TV. I’m at my sister’s tonight hanging out with some relatives.
A present to me from my dad
Update — well, it’s officially Christmas now so Merry Christmas. Time sure is flying. It’s already Monday, and it seems like I just started relaxing. I’ve gotten tons of sleep so far, which is really good. ...
Friday night I took some time out for a few beers with Derek and Cisco. We started down at Malone’s on Seymour and Pender, made our way down to the Yaletown Brew Pub momentarily (only to realize it was packed), hit Elixir at the Opus Hotel for a few bottles of wine, and finally ended up down at the Caprice for a while. I find it rather unfortunate that it’s next to impossible lately to go anywhere for beers on a Friday evening and actually get in. In fact, my last couple attempts for an after work beer have always involved a lot of pub-hunting, even to find two seats available. If you compare ...
I was coming into work this morning, and I read this on the front page of the Vancouver Sun. This is pretty big news in the medical community. Apparently some researchers at UofT have found a way to reverse diabetes in Type 1 diabetic mice. This is exciting because it was always thought that type I diabetic people lost the ability to produce insulin because their own immune system completely destroyed the beta cells in the pancreas. However, the beta cells in these mice became active again once they had an injection. Here’s the original article.
Also surprising is that this approach also seems ...
I found something a little more dumb than me making perogies the other night. Here’s a recent quote by Lindsay Lohan:
Lindsay Lohan says she’s been going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings for a year, but hasn’t talked about it because “it’s no one’s business.”
“I just left an AA meeting,” the 20-year-old actress tells People magazine in a story posted Tuesday on its Web site.
“I haven’t had a drink in seven days. Or anything,” she says. “I’m not even legal to, so why would I? I don’t drink when I go to clubs. I drink with my friends at home, but there’s no need ...
Tonight I had the stupid idea that I would come home from work and make a huge batch of perogies. Normally, I don’t attempt anything that dumb — at least not while sober — but with a big potlock coming up this weekend, I really need something to bring. Since I know my friends all like my grandma’s perogies, I decided to attempt that.
Perogies
So, I realize I’m not my grandma, and there’s no possible way I could put as much love and ukranian charm into my perogies as she does hers, but I thought I would take a stab at it. I’ve done this a few times, but at most I make perogies once ...
Tonight I spent some time in front of the TV, in some nice flannel pants (oh yeah), surfing the web, looking up random events. To that end, I really love wikipedia. I can so easily lose myself in that maze of knowledge, and find I can really learn a pile of new things just by spending an hour or two a week surfing through a pile of links.
Tonight I ended up going through the history of warfare, in particular, related to nuclear weapons. And I guess it kind of interested me, because technically I am a physicist (my undergrad was in Engineering Physics, and I took a few courses related to nuclear ...
